Guinness Announces The Top 50 Video Game Characters

The Guinness Book of World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition includes a list of the 50 best video game characters of all time. This list was settled by vote from readers and fans through the Guinness web site. Over 13,000 votes were counted for this poll, so that makes the results pretty strong.

Nintendo’s Mario tops the list, Microsoft’s Master Chief comes in third and Sony’s Solid Snake comes in fourth. My personal favorite, Ratchet from Sony, came in at #15.

The only real issue I take with the list is, perhaps, the perception of the term “character” and how fans voted them in. Master Chief, to me, is not the third best gaming character of all time. Does he deserve a spot on this list? Maybe he does, but it would definitely be closer to 50 than 1. Chief is a faceless avatar for shooter fans. The man speaks, but briefly. His personality is deliberately flat so that players can project as much of themselves as they want onto the Spartan. He’s a canvas.

Characters require a bit more personality in this writer’s opinion in order to be considered among the best of all time. But, hey, that’s only where I stand. I bet a few of you disagree with me pretty severely.
