Samsung Focus S Review

Samsung has refocused some of its efforts into the Windows Phone realm with the Samsung Focus S for AT&T. Upgrades from last year’s focus include a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen, thinner profile, 1080p HD video capture, and 1.4GHz processor. Oh, and it’s got juicy Windows Phone Mango 7.5 built in. The intriguing thing about the Samsung Focus S is that it’s $199.99 with a two-year AT&T contract, however its littler sibling, the Samsung Focus Flash is a mere $49.99 on contract. Granted, the Focus Flash has a smaller 3.7-inch Super AMOLED screen and 5-megapixel camera, but the processors and operating systems on each phone are identical. Check out our hands-on video of the Samsung Focus S to see if it will convince you to switch to the Mango.

Xbox Next, next year?

Multiple sources are reportedly speaking with Develop about Microsoft’s follow-up to the Xbox 360. While the site obviously did not reveal their tipsters, they do indicate that their information comes from sources across the industry, “from processor chip manufacturers to middleware firms.”
According to Develop’s information, the new Xbox will be called the “Xbox Next” and is currently slated to begin shipping in late 2013. The system will be fully unveiled at E3 in the same year. Develop also indicates that their sources suggest a more international release will occur into 2014.
Develop also shared these, “further developments:”
* Develop understands that Lionhead is working on a project internally named ‘Fable Next’, which will launch on the new console.
* Epic Games’ new Unreal Engine would likely be available sooner than the 2014 date recently given by studio founder Tim Sweeney.
* One source still insists that an EA studio already has rudimentary Xbox console technology on desks. EA has flatly denied the claim.
Microsoft has previously gone on record as saying that the Xbox 360 sports a 10 year life-cycle (just like the PlayStation 3). The console first launched in 2005, so, if the Xbox Next comes in 2013, the 360 will have only reached 8 years of shelf life. However, given past console generations, that’s a nice boost in longevity.
Develop did reach out to Microsoft specifically, but, of course, they declined to comment.
We’ll have more on this as it comes. Short of additional rumors and speculation, we wouldn’t go on expecting anything official or firm to crop up for a while.
As a note, this week’s Weekly Gaming Poll actually features a related topic: when will the next console generation arrive? I believe a lot of folks have their fingers pointing towards 2013; this may shore up some discussion below that article. Take time and join in.

iPhone | How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using RedSn0w (Windows) [5.0]

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS on the iOS 5.0 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows. The Mac tutorial is here.

This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock. Please wait until we have posted a tutorial on how to update to iOS 5 using a custom ipsw if you need an unlock. The jailbreak is also tethered for all devices except the old bootrom iPhone 3GS which means you will need to connect your device to the computer each time you reboot. Finally, it may be prudent to save your SHSH Blobs by following this tutorial before continuing.

If you want to jailbreak a lower firmware version you can find the appropriate tutorial here.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b6 from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the 5.0 firmware from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. (Note: you do not need to download the 5.0 firmware if you are already on iOS 5.0)

Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step Two: (Skip this step if you're on iOS 5 already)
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 5.0 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

iTunes will now update your iPhone to the new firmware.

Step Three
Launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

**Windows 7 users may want to try running the redsn0w executable mode as an administrator in Windows Vista compatibility. You can do this by right clicking the executable and selecting Properties from the contextual menu.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Jailbreak button

Step Five
Plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Six
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU modehere

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Seven
Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Eight
RedSn0w will prepare the jailbreak data.

Step Nine
Select Cydia from the list of options and click Next.

Step Ten
Your iPhone will now be rebooted again and RedSn0w will begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step Eleven
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

BOOT TETHERED
Once you have jailbroken you will need to rerun redsn0w to boot tethered.

Step One
From the main RedSn0w menu click the Extras button.

Step Two
Select Just boot from the Extras menu to just boot tethered.
